Which? is highly regarded as one of the most respected and impartial consumer publications across the UK, providing householders with unbiased test reports across a wide variety of products including audio, kitchen appliances, computers and cars. Which? profiles the results of its research to find the most reliable brands and products in the UK. Based upon a reliability score and customer score, all of the leading UK brands are ranked.
Between 18th May and 1st June 2010, Which? focussed on boilers and asked over 3,750 of its "Which? Connect members" (their panel of consumers) to tell them about their boilers which were installed up to six years ago.
From this comprehensive survey, Which? were able to determine a "reliability" and a "customer score" from consumers who own each brand. The reliability score was calculated upon the proportion of boilers that have had repairs (adjusted by age of boiler and only including those boilers less than 6 years old). The customer score is calculated from product satisfaction and likelihood of recommendation of the brand.
Glow-worm led the Performance Sector products with the highest reliability and customer score based on the Ultracom hxi boiler. The best in class customer score highlighted Glow-worm as the brand whose customers had a higher product satisfaction and where customers would most likely recommend Glow-worm to a friend.
The Glow-worm Ultracom 24 hxi received a special feature as the top-scoring heat-only boiler with an overall score of 78%, beating products from all other brands in this category. Which? described the boiler as ‘ticking all the right boxes for efficiency, low emissions, ease of installation, servicing and use’. The low NOx emissions, power use and heat loss from the casing were deemed ‘impressive’ as well as the benefit that it could also be converted to run on LPG.
